PAT Programs Welcomes a New Program Manager

AIHA PAT Programs is thrilled to announce that David Clawson joined the team as the Technical and Quality Program Manager on March 8, 2017.

David comes to PAT Programs from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) where he was the lead biologist in the Virology Bioproduction Department. As a Six Sigma Yellow Belt with a Master of Science in Biotechnology, David will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team.

In his spare time, David enjoys being a marathoner, triathlete, and a certified vinyasa flow yoga instructor.

PAT Programs Welcomes a New PAT Board Member

We are excited to welcome Melissa Ballard Hyde to the PAT Programs Board. Melissa, of Michelin North America, brings both IHPAT and BAPAT expertise to the PAT Board as an experienced PAT participant. Melissa has an MSPH in Industrial Hygiene and holds both the CIH and NRCC-CHO designation. Welcome Melissa!

2017 PAT Board Meeting

The 2017 PAT Board Meeting will be held April 27–28, 2017 at AIHA PAT Programs’ headquarters. This annual meeting provides two days of technical discussion about the PAT Programs. If you have anything you’d like to see go before the Board, please send it to Angela Oler on or before April 14, 2017.

PAT Programs Attends Silica Briefing on the Hill

Angela Oler of the AIHA-PAT programs was honored to join her colleagues from AIHA at a briefing they hosted on Capitol Hill for members of Congress, congressional staffers, reporters, and others about the dangers of respirable crystalline silica and the protections provided by OSHA’s recent final rule. The briefing took place on February 15. Given the recent rollbacks on federal regulation, AIHA hopes to educate policy makers on the importance of OSHA’s final ruling, which sets a new permissible exposure limit (PEL) for respirable crystalline silica of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air calculated as an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA).

Under the new rule, employers are required to use engineering controls to limit worker exposure to the PEL, provide respirators when engineering controls cannot adequately limit exposure, and limit worker access to high exposure areas.

AIHA CEO Larry Sloan, CAE, introduced the event’s speakers, which included AIHA Past President Daniel H. Anna, PhD, CIH, CSP, and former Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA David Michaels, PhD, MPH, who is also a professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health of George Washington University. Also addressing the briefing were three members of the U.S. House of Representatives: Democrats Joe Courtney of Connecticut's 2nd Congressional District, Carol Shea-Porter of New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District, and Darren Soto of Florida's 9th Congressional District.

2016 Participant Satisfaction Survey Results

Every few years, AIHA PAT Programs performs a benchmarking survey with the goal of providing participants better service through continuous improvement. In December, we released the survey and were thrilled with the engaging participation and appreciate the feedback we received.  An infographic summarizing the key survey results was compiled and is available for download here.

A2LA Technical Forum for PT Providers

Angela Oler, David Clawson, and Kim Bacon look forward to attending the A2LA Technical Forum for PT Providers. In any industry, continuous improvement through training is important. As a proficiency testing provider, it is vital to stay plugged in to the latest and greatest in our field. The A2LA Tech Forum promotes collaboration and provides training and development opportunities for conformity assessment bodies – including PAT Programs.

Technology Transition

AIHA PAT Programs is planning to move into a new data management system in 2017. Please take the time to ensure that you have saved a copy of all pertinent PAT Reports out of the data portal. Once the transition takes place, only reports that have been generated in the new system will be available for download.

Updated Course- Developing and Maintaining a Laboratory Quality Management System

Laboratory coats may appear similar in style and color, but some scientists may be surprised to discover that there is no universal laboratory coat suitable for protection from all laboratory hazards.

The Industrial Hygiene Proficiency Analytical Testing (IHPAT) Program is designed to assist a laboratory improve its analytical performance by providing samples on a quarterly basis, evaluating the results, and providing a report on how well the laboratory performed. In the same way, the IHPAT Program also tests the analytical competence of participating occupational health laboratories.

The IHPAT Metals Program includes four filters containing three of the following metals: lead, cadmium, nickel, manganese, or chromium. These are rotated each round.

Who should participate in the IHPAT Program?

If a laboratory analyzes samples taken from the workplace environment, then participation in the IHPAT Program can provide information to clients on laboratory performance. In addition, a laboratory must be a part of the IHPAT Program to participate in the AIHA's Industrial Hygiene Laboratory Accreditation Program.
