Is your laboratory proficient at its field of testing? Do you have a third-party evaluation to prove it?

56-2.pngEMPAT Culture is a performance evaluation program, sponsored by the AIHA Proficiency Analytical Testing Programs (AIHA PAT Programs), for environmental microbiology laboratories. This program was developed for laboratories specializing in analysis for microorganisms commonly detected in air, fluids and bulk samples collected from schools, offices, hospitals, industrial, agricultural, and other work environments. EMPAT Direct Exam program is valuable for organizations that analyze fungal spores by light microscopy. Participating in the Direct Exam program enables participants primarily performing spore trap analysis to illustrate proficiency and improve performance in the microscopic analysis of environmental samples. The EMPAT program is open to all interested microbiology laboratories.

Upon enrollment in the EMPAT program, a participant can elect to participate in any combination of fungal, bacterial culture or the digital Direct Exam. An EMLAP accredited laboratory must participate and be rated proficient in each of the organism classes for the Fields of Testing for which the laboratory is accredited. Participants in the EMPAT Culture program analyze pure cultures of fungi and bacteria. Participants in the EMPAT Direct Exam program identify fungal spores in 20 different digital images included each round.

Three EMPAT Culture rounds will be held each year, in February, June, and October. Participants will receive samples in KWIK-STIK format and have four weeks to complete the sample analysis. Four EMPAT Direct Exam rounds will be held each year, in January, April, July, and October. Each organization will have 60 minutes to view and identify the spore images within a one week window.

Proficiency is determined by receiving a passing score for at least two of the three previous rounds. A passing score is determined differently for EMPAT Culture and EMPAT Direct Exam. Learn more about the EMPAT program today!
